Greetings and Welcome!

Dear Friend and Visitor to St. John’s in the Mountains,

Welcome to Stowe and our faith community! Whether this is your first visit or you call St. John’s your faith community home-away-from-home, we are honored by your presence and glad to have you worship with us.

St. John’s in the Mountains Episcopal Church started humble beginnings, meeting in local hotels and other establishments in 1922. In late 1954, we purchased the West Branch School, located at the corner of Luce Hill and Mountain Roads in Stowe. In 1955, the faith community was welcomed in the Diocese of Vermont as a mission church and by 1985, we grew large enough to become a parish church. In 2006, the old schoolhouse was purchased by the Stowe Historical Society for $2 and the building of a new church began. St John’s opened its doors on Sunday, June 24, 2007, on The Nativity of St. John the Baptist, our patron saint.

Almost 15 years later, St. John’s continues to thrive and grow. With a memorial gift from the estate of Ann Orlov Rubinow, our grantmaking ministry exceeds $10,000 every year to agencies in our surrounding area. We are active members of the Greater Stowe Interfaith Coalition, an organization that gathers for worship, social action, and education for the wider community. St. John’s continues to engage our regional community in the areas of housing the unhoused, addressing the needs of those living with food scarcity, and engaging social dynamics of racism, LGBTQ+ inclusion, and poverty drawing on Christ’s call to seek the lost, raise up the oppressed, and feed the hungry.

If you have any questions about St. John’s in the Mountains, the Stowe area, or Vermont in general, please do not hesitate to ask any member. It will help us get to know you better as well.

As Rector, I have the joy of welcoming you to our church and inviting you to return. Your presence is a gift from God and may God bless you on your journey in faith. Please contact the parish office at 802-253-7578 with any questions you might have about who we are and how you might call St. John’s your home. Heidi Dwyer, our parish secretary will be able to assist you.

May God be with you this day and always.

In Christ,

Fr. Rick Swanson

Rector
